Interview with Emma: Reflections on an Internship Abroad in Japan

Meet Emma!

Meet Emma from the Netherlands who has completed her 5-month internship at an international school in Shibuya, Tokyo.
This was her first time to Japan.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your internship experience?

Emma: Hello! My name is Emma, I am 21 years old, and I completed my internship in the field of education.
It has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, filled with both professional and personal growth.

Q: What made this internship so impactful for you?

Emma: I can’t really think of any other experience where I've grown this much as a person in just a few months.
From handling different responsibilities to interacting with new cultures, it’s been a transformative journey. The kids were amazing, and I had a very supportive supervisor, which made the experience even more fulfilling.

Q: What challenges did you face during your internship?

Emma: Adapting to a new culture and learning a bit of the language were significant challenges.
Also, the teaching methods were quite different from what I was used to back home.
But these challenges were crucial for my growth—they taught me resilience and adaptability.

Q: Any advice for others considering an internship in Japan?

Emma: Honestly, just go for it. You might feel nervous or unsure at first, but the experiences you gain are invaluable.
Embrace the challenges, because they make the whole experience more rewarding. You never know what will come from it, but it's likely to be something wonderful.

Q: How do you feel now, looking back at your internship?

Emma: I’m really sad it had to end because everything unfortunately has to come to an end. But looking back, I treasure every moment of it.
It’s something that has left a lasting impression on me, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to expand their horizons!
